Creating a visually engaging family history book design was the primary goal. Also, having it accessible for a macular degeneration audience meant transitioning from Word styles to Adobe InDesign styles. This ensured engagement without compromising accessibility. The design aimed to cater to the author’s vision and the audience’s needs for a visually appealing experience.

The formatting adjustments were critical in ensuring ease of reading. Adapting the text to Arial font at a 14-point size within a two-column layout was specifically tailored to accommodate those with visual impairments, aligning with the author’s specifications while prioritizing readability.

Beyond textual modifications, the integration of custom-designed maps played a pivotal role. These maps weren’t merely geographical representations but served as visual aids, anchoring emotions to significant life locations. Their inclusion not only enhanced comprehension but also evoked a deeper connection to the narrative.

Another facet of the project involved restoring numerous photographs to their optimal quality. These images underwent meticulous transformation, ensuring they were press-ready and seamlessly integrated into the storyline. Each photo became an integral part of the narrative, enhancing the reader’s visual journey through the family’s history.

The book’s cover design was a prelude, setting the tone for the experience within. The carefully crafted graphical design and color scheme were more than aesthetics; they acted as an invitation, enticing readers to delve into the pages within.

Moreover, the book was strategically equipped with extensive cross-referencing and a comprehensive photographic index. These elements served as guiding threads, weaving together the interconnected memories within the narrative. This thoughtful curation offered readers not only a linear journey but also the ability to navigate the family’s history with ease and understanding.

This project stands as a testament to the impact of design. It not only achieved the goal of accessible book design for those with macular degeneration but also upheld visual coherence in a narrative-driven approach. Through meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of both design and accessibility, this accomplishment showcased the transformative power of thoughtful and inclusive design methodologies.
